Prayers for Our President and Nation
URGENT: We, the American people, are being tested as never before. Two major hurricanes have slammed into the Gulf, leaving millions homeless and in desperate need; Supreme Court Justices are retiring, placing the burden of replacing them squarely on the shoulders of President George W. Bush; Washington is at an all-time high for partisanship; our economy is hanging in the balance - NO President has ever faced so many challenges within such a short period of time - four-and-a-half years - and handled them all - and kept our nation's economy growing. Not to mention being the Commander of the greatest battle our nation has ever faced - the battle against pure hatred and evil!
President Bush is a professed believer in Jesus Christ - he even confessed Jesus to be his best friend during the primaries. It would be worth your time and effort to think back to that time during the RNC's choosing of a presidential nominee and the first election back in November of 1999 and follow the events that lead up to now.
Without a doubt in my mind, I wholeheartedly believe that this administration has been Satan's target right from the second that profession was uttered! I also firmly believe that President Bush was pre-destined by God to be president for this time in our history.
But all that said, President Bush needs our prayers to help direct his course and strengthen his resolve. He's made of flesh and blood with human emotions and physical attributes, just like we are. He needs our support in every way we can give it, and prayer is still the most powerful!
We invite you to join millions who are praying with The Presidential Prayer Team for President Bush and our nation. Membership is free.

Throughout America’s history, her presidents have made frequent and passionate calls for prayer. In his first Inaugural Address, George Washington called for supplications to God, asking Him to guard the freedom and happiness of all Americans.
Such being the impressions under which I have, in obedience to the public summons, repaired to the present station, it would be peculiarly improper to omit, in this first official act, my fervent supplications to that Almighty Being who rules over the universe, who presides in the councils of nations and whose providential aide can supply every human defect, that His benediction may consecrate to the liberties and happiness of the people of the United States a Government instituted by themselves for these essential purposes; and may enable every instrument employed in its administration to execute with success, the functions allotted to his charge.
-- George Washington, April 30, 1789

Abraham Lincoln called for prayer on many occasions, but perhaps the most notable cry came on March 3, 1863 at the height of the Civil War, when he asked the Senate to join him in repentance, fasting and prayer for America. With these words, Lincoln stirred the Senate to action:
We have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and
have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us! It behooves us, then, to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray for clemency and forgiveness.
-- Abraham Lincoln, in National Proclamation of Prayer and Repentence

In addition to the tradition of presidents calling for prayer, the Scriptures encourage prayer for our leaders:
I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving
be made for everyone-- for kings and all those in authority, that we may live
peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and
pleases God our Savior…

PRAYER FOR THE NATION
--by Rev. Billy Graham
Our Father and Our God, We praise You for Your goodness to our nation, giving us blessings far beyond what we deserve. Yet we know all is not right with America. We
deeply need a moral and spiritual renewal to help us meet the many problems we face. Convict us of sin. Help us to turn to You in repentance and faith. Set our feet on the path of Your righteousness and peace. We pray today for our nation's leaders. Give them the wisdom to know what is right, and the courage to do it. You have said, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord." May this be a new era for America, as we humble ourselves and acknowledge You alone as our Savior and Lord. This we pray in Your holy name, Amen.
Prayer for America
Written by Dr. Barry Black
Chaplain, United States Senate
Gracious God,
You have been good to us beyond our deserving, making our Nation a land of liberty.Help us to protect our freedoms with diligence and integrity. Lord, bless our military as it advances freedom’s cause around the world. Bless also the institutions of power and influence in our society – the government, the churches, the media, the schools and the families. May each bring glory to Your name. Forgive us when we stray from right paths. We place our trust in You, O Lord, believing that Your hand will sustain America. Let no shadows obscure the pathways which we should tread.
We pray in Your holy name.
Amen.

Additional Prayer Quotations:
Worship and intercession must go together, the one is impossible without the other. Intercession means that we rouse ourselves up to get the mind of Christ about the one for whom we pray. Too often instead of worshipping God, we construct statements as to how prayer works. Are we worshipping or are we in dispute with God- 'I don't see how You are going to do it.' This is a sure sign that we are not worshipping.
--Oswald Chambers
Every great movement of God can be traced to a kneeling figure.
--D.L. Moody
Intercessory prayer might be defined as loving our neighbor on our knees.
--Charles Brent
Our praying, however, needs to be pressed and pursued with an energy that never tires, a persistency which will not be denied, and a courage which never fails.
--E.M. Bounds
When a Christian people feel themselves to be overtaken by a great public calamity, it becomes them to humble themselves under the dispensation of Divine Providence, to recognize His righteous government over the children of men, to acknowledge His goodness in time past, as well as their own unworthiness, and to supplicate His merciful protection for the future.
--President John Tyler, upon the death of President William Henry Harrison, April 13, 1841
