Dr. Kevin Nunley's Biz Tip:
Your Junk Mail Holds Untold Secrets
I've got a neighbor who enters every Publisher's Clearing House-type sweepstakes she can find. Her name is on lots of bulk mailing lists and you can imagine the avalanche of junk mail she gets each day. I ask her to send some of it next door to me.
Here's why. Junk mail holds a wealth of marketing wisdom. Big bulk advertisers spend millions on their campaigns. New York City's most expensive writers churn out top notch sales letters. Then those letters are tested to find the most effective before anything is mailed. The brochure, envelope, and sales letter that arrive in your mailbox are almost always the product of many ad experts doing their best work.
Take note of the things advertisers put on their envelope to get you to open it. Notice the kinds of advertisers who use a long 6 or 12 page sales letter as opposed to those who hit you with a full-color glossy brochure. Save good headlines and remember interesting formulas.
Look for ways you can borrow a few of their good ideas. Much of savvy marketing consists of copying others' successful methods.
