Network Everywhere!

When my son was very small he had a hard time striking up a conversation with other kids. In frustration, he would wind up hitting the other child. A clever teacher took him aside and said, "You need a sentence you can use to start up a conversation. When you see another child you want to play with say, 'I have a dog named Benjy.'" Presto! The trick worked like a charm.

It's true that we learn the important rules of selling by the time we're in Kindergarten. Most businesses say they get up to 80% of their sales through networking. Good networkers talk to everyone.

Practice a few ice-breaking lines you can deliver to strangers everywhere you go. Elevators, lines at the post office, big meetings, the gas station. You have dozens of opportunities to strike up a conversation with someone who could become a client, associate, referral, or contact.

Very few people will be annoyed by your attempts. In a world where most of us don't know our neighbors or the workers across the street, it is often comforting to have someone reach out.
